Descriptionup for auction is an antique victorian catholic alter or shrine. It si a very unusual one. There is a photo album that is held closed with a latch. There is a pope on the cover and i believe he may be pope pius x (papacy 1903-1914). When you open the latch, the book flips over to reveal baby jesus on the other side. Inside is a compartment that has a bisque statue of mother mary and jesus. There was something applied on the velvet wall between them. Maybe a sacred heart of jesus or crucifix. The book is a photo album that likely held images of family in order to gain blessings. There are sevearl old victorian pictures inside. The first photo shows a man with a gun and his dog and the back is dated 1910. hTe album pages are intact but there is staining and some tattering of pages. Some of the pics have issues (spotting, one has a crease). The baby jesus side of the album cover is pretty nice with some staining at his feet and 2 spots of white paint. The poep side is very cracked and has a couple chips. The jesus and mary staues are very dusty but otherwise nice. There are mirrors behind the statues. The paper wallpaper where the statues are si peeled in places. The stripey brown velvet on the box is pretty nice but very dusty. The wood looking paper that goes around the base has some splits in it and a piece missing but underneath that missing piece, you can see where the wood is nice. There is a compartment on back where you could put some prayer items.
There is tattering and staining on the blue material on back. I think it is paper. The wood cross at the top has broken ta the arms and the blue backing has some missing on one side and a strip missing in the center. It looks better on the other side although the velvet is a bit tattery on the underside of the one arm. The front side has some brass ornamentation, including a cross shape which matches the brass corners of the album and latch. Nice decorative latch. Teh album measures 10.75 x 8.5. Height of shrine measures 18 tall to the top of the cross. Base measures 12 wide x 6.75 deep. Will include a postage calculator for u. S. Bidders. If international bidders would like to get an idea of postage, it should weigh and measure 12 lbs. 24x15x10 packed. Insurance is required (for example, up to 50.00 is 1.70). I take international items packed to the post office for an exact postage quote and do not charge international ahndling fees. If item weighs less than 70 lbs.
